Tour du Mont Blanc

Overview

The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is one of Europe’s most famous long-distance hiking routes, circling the Mont Blanc massif through France, Italy, and Switzerland.

  • Distance: about 170 km (105 miles), though variants can make it longer
  • Elevation gain: roughly 10,000 meters (32,800 feet) of ascent overall
  • Duration: typically 7–14 days
  • Countries: France 🇫🇷, Italy 🇮🇹, Switzerland 🇨🇭
  • Highest points: mountain passes around 2,500–2,700 meters
  • Difficulty: challenging rather than technical; good fitness and experience with long mountain days are recommended
  • Best season: generally late June to September, with July–August offering the most reliable conditions but also more hikers

What To Expect Along The Way

The route usually starts and finishes around Les Houches/Chamonix. You walk through spectacular Alpine valleys and over high passes, with constantly changing views of Mont Blanc, glaciers, forests, meadows and traditional mountain villages.

A typical day might involve 6–9 hours of walking, with substantial climbs and descents. The trail itself is generally non-technical, so you don’t normally need climbing equipment, but weather can change quickly and some sections are steep, rocky or exposed.

Accommodations

You can do the TMB in several ways:

Refuge-to-refuge: Stay in mountain refuges, often in dormitory-style rooms, with dinner and breakfast available. This is the classic experience.

Hotels/guesthouses: Stay in villages where possible, giving you more comfort but sometimes requiring transportation or route adjustments.

Camping: Possible on parts of the route, subject to national/local regulations. Wild camping is restricted or prohibited in many areas, so it requires careful planning.

The Appeal of The TMB

The TMB is particularly special because it combines three countries and several distinct Alpine landscapes in a single trek. You get dramatic mountain scenery without needing to be a technical mountaineer, plus the social atmosphere of staying in refuges with hikers from around the world.
